In June of 2015, Shani Jamila was invited by Writing On It All to lead an arts workshop/ community installation on Governor’s Island. Shani’s project, Altar, was an engagement with the ramifications of state violence on Black women and girls. Conceived in the immediate wake of the incidents in McKinley, TX and Fairfield, OH, this installation in an empty house on Governor’s Island was designed to create sacred spaces for healing, resistance and expression.
