Dancing While Black NYU: Story circles on Performance, Activism and the Black Dancing Body

“The energy in the room was fantastic–warm, respectful, supportive and motivating.” – Eva Yaa Asantewaa

On December 5, 2013 Shani Jamila and Paloma McGregor led a dynamic group of scholars, writers & artists in an evening of participatory story circles on performance, activism and the Black dancing body. This experience, held at NYU’s Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics, was facilitated via veteran theater-maker/activist John O’Neal’s Story Circle methodology. Dancing While Black is an artist-driven effort developed by Paloma to support and illuminate the diverse work and experiences of black dance artists through production, process, dialogue and documentation.
